My makeup drawer features a somewhat random mix of prestige and non-so-prestige products—but you’d never know upon seeing the final results of my handiwork. I don’t think anyone would be able to spot the difference between a $10 or $30 eyeliner, but it’s a fact that a higher-priced product may provide a better user experience. I have no problem shelling out the big bucks for a Tom Ford eyeshadow palette that I’ll use over and over again, but an expensive eyeliner to try out a trend? Not so much.
That’s why I get really excited when I find a budget-friendly alternative that offers a near-identical result to its more costly counterpart—and here are my latest discoveries.
The splurge: Westman Atelier Vital Skin Foundation Stick ($68)
The save: Merit Beauty The Minimalist Perfecting Complexion Stick ($38)
Forget everything you assume about foundation sticks… They don’t have to be heavy or opaque. In fact, the latest iterations are super-lightweight, and they allow you to add coverage only where you need it (and build it up if necessary). They key for a flawless finish is blending it well with a brush, and Merit Beauty’s version is my go-to when I want more coverage than my Saie tinted moisturizer provides.
The splurge: Victoria Beckham Satin Kajal Liner in “Bronze” ($28)
The save: Pixi Beauty Endless Silky Eye Pen in “RoseGlow” ($12)
I’ve been thinking about trying a new eye look, because I’m getting a little bored with the single shade of cream shadow (even just for Zooms and running around during the day). I’ve never been big on eyeliner, but a saw a tutorial for a super-simple, smudgy smoky eye that could be achieved with just one pencil. Obviously black would be a bit much, so I busted out my Pixi Beauty and love, love, loved it. I like this shimmery shade because it has a dash of “sootiness” that makes it look ever-so-slightly edgy, and nothing close to looking like a raccoon.
The splurge: Westman Atelier Baby Cheeks Blush Stick in “Poppet” ($48)
The save: Jones Road Lip and Cheek Stick in “Bright Pink”($34)
Blush is back in a big way, and a pop of pink just feels really happy to me right now. I have the Westman Atelier in “Petal” (which is definitely more on the subtle side), so I was eager to give Jones Road a chance on this one. The creamy formula is lovely. It’s easy to blend, stays put and makes me smile every time I use it.
So there you have ‘em… My latest ways to save a little money while still getting the look you’re after. If you’ve discovered any must-know dupes, please share in the comments below!
